What is it about?

①Postcards made with Ise Katagami paper.

"Ise Katagami," the stencil paper used in kimono dyeing. Craftspeople known as "katagami-shi" intricately carve elaborate patterns and designs onto durable paper made from processed washi. It's astonishing to think that for small patterns, they can carve over 900 motifs into a space as small as one square inch (about 3cm x 3cm).

This time, we will use a stencil created by traditional craftsman Chiaki Imasaka to practice stencil dyeing on postcards.

②Mizuhiki-style money envelope.

"Mizuhiki," the decorative cord used for celebratory envelopes and gift items. It's a traditional Japanese craft that involves coloring and winding threads around to create intricate designs. In recent times, it has been adapted for various applications, including modern accessories and interior decorations with a traditional touch.

In this course, you will learn the basics of Awaji knot and Ume knot techniques. With this knowledge, you can create your own original pouches by combining your favorite washi paper and Mizuhiki designs.

③Making Mizuhiki

"Mizuhiki," the decorative cord used for celebratory envelopes and gift items. It's a traditional Japanese craft that involves coloring and winding threads around to create intricate designs.

From the Awaji knot and Ume knot to an adorable rabbit-themed arrangement, you can create your favorite bookmarks using these techniques.

④Make a clasp purse using traditional Japanese fabric.

Using traditional Japanese textiles often used for kimonos and handmade washi paper, we will create mini-sized clasp purses and coin cases. These mini clasp purses are perfect for use as accessory cases. The best part is, they can be made without any sewing, making it incredibly simple.
